Here is a convenient map of the continent on which this particular strain of Tamora Pierce's books take place, as well as the surrounding countries. This map is included to varying degrees of detail in the beginning of every novel. Daine's home, Galla, is in the north. The main focus of most of the novels, Tortall, is to the south and east of Galla.
GOVERNMENT
Tortall is run by a monarchy, ruled by King Jonathan and Queen Thayet. The (male) children of Tortall, should their parents be able to afford it, are sent to the castle in Corus to learn to become knights. Since Alanna's triumph (which will be extrapolated upon below) Queen Thayet started her own small army called the Queen's Riders, a fighting force of 'irregulars' consisting of men and women on pony- or horseback.

Sarra Beneksri and Daine's Maternal Grandmother
These two were Daine's only family growing up. Both had the Gift, and although Daine was tested for it on several occassions it was decided that she did not posses it. Daine loved both of them very much, and they loved her despite her oddness with animals.
Cloud
Daine's pony and closest friend, Cloud has been with her since before the bandit attack that killed her mother and grandmother and stayed with her through thick and thin since then. In many ways Cloud took on the roll of caretaker, making sure that Daine remembered to feed and wash herself and often reminding her that she is human. They consider each other family.
Onua ChamtongOnua was selling horses at a fair when she ran into Daine. Although she was hesitant to give the child work, she couldn't resist after seeing how well Daine handled the horses. Onua has the Gift, which she uses to protect their camp and the horses, and brought Daine to Tortall to become assistant horse mistress. ( ... )

The Emperor of Carthak wants to start a war. Years ago, creatures created in the dreams of children came to life and wandered the lands, but it was decided that they could not be allowed free reign of the world and a group of mages worked to lock them all away in the Divine Realms. TIMELINE SPECIFICS
Daine was born 436 HE. Her village burned down in 449, when she was 13 years old. It was around this same year that she was hired by Onua. At the end of Wolf-Speaker, the year is 450 and Daine is 14 years old.
