Best Movie Scenes, Vol. I

Apr 06, 2008 17:44

I've been all about lists recently, haven't I? I have all your Top 5 requests to fill still from this week's latest meme. However, I had a spark of inspiration from watching Visions of Light, a documentary about the history of cinematography, and I began to make a list of my own favorite film scenes and sequences. I have so many already that I want ( Read more... )

Okay, so just reading about those two Finding Neverland scenes made me cry, for real.

I know! How sad is that movie? I cry just watching those scenes by themselves

The Edward Scissorhands scene is really the only one I can relate to as I've seen it and none of the others (except Almost Famous but only once). I always end up getting a bit teary eyed when Kim asks Edward to hold her and he just goes, "I can't." Gah, kills me.

You should totally continue this!

I think I will! Thanks for your comment :)

You should definitely at least see Finding Neverland. It's so sad! I loved Breathless but it's very stylish and not for everyone

I DON'T KNOW, DUDE, but you should.

I can't say it's for everyone, but I loved it and I normally have such a hard time with movies made before 1970 or 80. It was very, very stylish. It's also listed as one of the most influential films of all time. Ebert said that just like there is before Citizen Kane and after Citizen Kane, there is before Breathless and after Breathless. It was a real driver of the French New Wave, which we have to thank for basically all of our films these days but most definitely indie cinema. There's so much emphasis on style over plot substance, and realistic character nuances over traditional dramatic character motifs.

And hello Jean Seberg is totally chic and beautiful rocking the short hair. And I think Jean-Paul Belmondo is totally sexy, rubbing his lip all Bogart-like. Sigh. It's even just great to look at, besides all the awesome content!

EVERYONE picks that scene and I don't get it. I mean, I guess I kind of do, but my friends and I sing along to songs all the time. It didn't strike me particularly hard when I saw it.

The scene I picked is just the perfect point in the film where William realizes that here he's had this first love, lets it go, along with all of his crazy experiences, moves on, and after this bittersweet moment of saying goodbye to the one piece of his experience he might have liked to hold onto, goes happily back home to his family.

I also liked getting the sense from this scene that Penny really did get something from William, and that was that she didn't have to act older than she really was to find a love that she deserved. I liked the idea that in this moment she realized she had this affection (or even love) for the young boy her age who loved her more sincerely than the older men she was screwing around with. It's a powerful moment for the both of them
