It has been raining since mid-morning, but that's not about to stop Aphrodite from taking a dip in the ocean. The waves are a little choppier than usual, but she's a very good swimmer, and she's got herself a little shorty wetsuit just for this kind of situation - pink, of course ( Read more... )

Aphrodite, for her part, isn't protesting. She's been buffeted against the dock a couple times, and she's definitely going to be pissed when she sees the bruises on her temple and forearms. For now, though, she's unconscious, floating in the increasingly choppy waves, Percy's arm securely around her.

This wave looked like it could smash the pier to little bitty pieces, and I've barely got a hold of Aphrodite -- what would Annabeth say if she knew I had my arms around the goddess of love right now? She'd probably shout: focus, Percy, focus!!

I'd send up a prayer to whatever gods might be listening, but seeing as there's a god right here, and she's in no condition to help me, I don't actually see the point. And if the sea is anything to go by, Dad isn't listening to me, either. You're on your own, kid. Get used to it.

I hook an arm and a leg around the rungs of the ladder and pull Aphrodite towards me, pulling her arms between the runs as well. I cover my head and shield the goddess of love as the wave crashes down. There is a terrible churning strike. Then we surface.

Miraculously, the pier is still there.

Apparently, a giant wave hitting her is what Aphrodite needs to regain consciousness, and her arms automatically tighten around whatever it is they're holding onto as she emerges, coughing and sputtering. She doesn't immediately notice Percy, as disoriented as she is, just focuses on trying to keep her head above water. Her head is pounding, she has no idea what in the name of Hades just happened, and this is so not cool. She is so a totally better swimmer than this.
