Maybe it's just hanging out with the Foucault-loving C___ so much, maybe because I live in Brahmin-town (Brahmins may just as well be floating brains, apparently), or maybe it's just Marx continually reminding me to work to reunite mental and physical labor as 'sensuous activity,' but I feel like everybody's beating up on Descartes ( Read more... )

I agree, I agree!

In the Parasite, Michel Serres quotes someone who says that Descartes burned down his house so he could hear the sound of the rats in the attic. That's a metaphor. They were disturbing his tranquil sleep!

Also, Derrida leaps to the "(de)fense" (that's sarcasm) of Descartes AGAINST FOUCAULT in My Body, This Paper, This Fire (my favorite title of an academic essay ever).
