With the advent of the new year I've been pondering whether or not to try and contact an old friend of mine, N.

I'd try to get in touch with both D and N, or N's son. If it doesn't happen, at least you tried. And if it does, what a nice thing to be back in touch, even if it's just a catch-up.
It is sad when relationships no longer exist, when they were so much a part of our lives before.

I think you're right. I should try to get in touch with everyone. None of us are getting younger and I'd love to know how everyone is doing. I feel the sadness of losing my old friends.
