The beginning to getting out of a hole is not "aww, it's too bad you're in a hole" and it is most definitely "you're not really in a hole and it will get better," it's "yes, you are in a hole, and let's figure out what kind of a hole you're in." After that comes "let's look at you and figure out whether you want to stay in the hole or get out of it." Finally, you get to "now, how do you get out of the hole?"

If you miss the first two, the third won't do you any good. I can tell you need a ladder to get out of the hole, but if there is no ladder, you'll still be in the hole and you'll be even more unhappy. If I toss you a rope and you'd rather stay in the hole for your own reasons, you'll avoid the rope and it will annoy me that you're ignoring my rope.

So look around you. Find how big the hole is. How deep is it? Does it have steep walls or sloping walls? Is there a rope somewhere? Is there anybody else in the hole? That's job 1.
