Title: White Picket Fences
Rating: G
Pairing: Max/Liz (actually Richie/Yvonne from a specific episode)
The blow to the face was nothing compared to the bitter bite of Hal's words: "I hope you enjoy your white picket fences, Richie, 'cause you've sure earned it."
Hal would never understand what it was like to lose the only woman that ever meant anything. He was always chasing after the newest skirt. But Yvonne, Richie thought, Yvonne was special.
Richie would never have that white picket fence or any of those fine things Hal had always pulled his leg about. The only woman he would have ever considered spending his life with was now gone. And he'd had a part in that.
He couldn't think. Not even two hours ago, he'd helped Yvonne - the love of his life - escape. But to where? He didn't know. He had made sure that he wouldn't. There would be no white picket fences for Richie. Yvonne was gone

They'd captured Yvonne just as she was leaving Hal's truck. What a damn hypocrite, Hal was. And a woman stealer at that. They'd been tracking Hal the whole time and Richie wished that the guy had just left well enough alone. He was such a lazy son of a bitch on a normal day.
Richie couldn't help but to blame Hal. If he and that reporter girl hadn't been snooping around, Yvonne wouldn't have been in danger. Then he wouldn't have had to say goodbye to her, knowing that he would never see her again. But Hal was still his best friend. Richie couldn't let him die. He'd already stepped in it when he'd coerced the confession about that reporter. Richie was sure he didn't want to know what had happened with that.
He and Hal had been through tough times together. Their friendship meant something. Still, Richie pulled out the secret weapon. With all his womanizing, Hal had always had a soft spot for Rosemary. Richie knew that if he dangled that in front of Hal's face, that his friend would back off. And he did. With as much grace that Hal Carver could muster. But Hal couldn't resist that last jab.

It was a whole lot of trouble getting Yvonne to safety. Richie had to put his neck on the line. He didn't even know if he should anymore. Hadn't Yvonne just been in that womanizer's truck? No, he told himself. Yvonne was a good woman. She would never fall for Hal's charms.
"Richie. What are you - what are you doing here?" Yvonne asked in a whisper. There were guards outside this door as well as every door in the base. She knew to keep her voice hushed.
Richie worked on the ropes. The knots were tight and haphazardly tied but he managed to free his girlfriend. "When I heard that they'd detained you, I just had to know where you were. My security clearance," he flashed the tag, "gets me into heaps of places but I'm sure that they know that you're my girl."
Yvonne's fingers gripped into his jacket. "Oh, Richie. I hope that they don't find out that you freed me. I don't even know why they tied me up here. But I can bet it's about those - bodies, right?"
"Yes. It's about that. They were never going to send you away." He captured her cheeks in his hands. Her makeup and her hair were a mess, but she was alive. And a sight for sore eyes.
"I'm going to get you out of here. I can't take you myself, but I trust the officer who's driving you out of here."
"And then you'll meet us later?" Yvonne's doe-like eyes almost tempted Richie to say yes. That they could run off together - live the rest of their lives out in peace. But he knew that wouldn't happen.
"No, darling. You must leave here without me. Start a life somewhere no one knows you. It will be too dangerous if I know where you are."
Yvonne's eyes brimmed with tears. "No. You can't make me leave. I love you. I'll stand beside you come what may."
Richie wished that could be true. "Listen, honey. I love you too and if I have a chance, I will come to you. Right now, you have to promise me that you'll get away. As far as you can."
"Oh, Richie. I don't think I can."
"Yvonne. You are a strong woman. That's one of your best qualities." Ritchie could admit. He couldn't even be in the same room as those - things, but she had helped with the autopsy. "You have to go. He punctuated his insistence with a firm kiss and she kissed back just as passionately.
He pulled away reluctantly. Still wanting to be near her, he pulled her close in an embrace. They had to hurry, but he needed one more moment with her.
"You see to it that you come find me. As soon as you can, you hear?" Yvonne said against his neck. And he nodded.
"Okay. But for now, you have to get to safety." He let go of her reluctantly to peer out of the doorway. Nothing was stirring. He grabbed her hand and pulled her against his side. "Okay, here we go."

He doesn't care when, later, the alarm goes off and they all begin to chase Hal. Doty wishes - in the back of his mind - that they will capture him and detain him and humiliate him and frighten him. Like he'd caused Yvonne to be.
They don't catch Hal but he doesn't get away with that evidence. The camera smashed in the escape but the film is okay. They take the roll and all the other evidence they can get their hands on. The glowing sacks were gone, though. Taken right from under their noses.
