ahhhhh, I have struggling against finally succumbing to the power of the Coldplay. then, I heard the new Radiohead and I'm back on the anti-Coldplay bandwagon. just not my cup of tea, but I don't fault anyone at all for liking them.
I wonder if it's a prerequisite, when you're hired to be a record store clerk, to make fun of people for their music choices and generally be an asshole? the only times that I've gotten any positive feedback was when I traded in some supercrap for a Girls Vs. Boys CD and another time when I purchased Brenda Lee's Greatest Hits. gosh, that record clerk was friggin' gorgeous. *swoon*
Someone burned Parachutes for me over a year ago. I suppose I should fish it out and see what it sounds like, if it weren't for the fact that I buy 9 million new things per week.
I used to work at a record store, at the college radio station, at my school's weekly arts and entertainment paper (reviewing albums and other things), *and* am a musician, so my snobbery knows no bounds. There was much eye-rolling behind the counter when certain things were asked for...or when certain albums were played over the store stereo (it was a somewhat diverse bunch). I do remember liking to stare at the cover of DMB's Remember Two Things just to test my Magic-Eye-seeing capabilities, but that's about it.
There are a few red flags musically that I can think of off the top of my head...like Marvin Gaye. If someone isn't moved by listening to him, check their pulse before kicking their ass to the curb.

I'm a big music snob, but I also like Hanson without irony.

Besides, Hanson had some catchy tunes. they were like the Jackson 5, but not as Osmond-creepy.
I was rockin out to Len's "Steal My Sunshine" a few years ago...and love my share of cheasy listening crap.
But Sheryl Crow out and out suxx. Such an annoying voice, such terrible songs.
Also, every time I hear Paula Cole sing "Say a little prayer for I" I want to scream.
(Yes, that is Alain Delon. He is the man I aspire to be...well, one of them.)
