distress signals [Enterprise Bridge]

Oct 21, 2009 23:05

As soon as Nyota stepped onto the Bridge, it felt like a weight had been lifted from her chest. She strode over to her console, nodding with a smile as the Ensign before he graciously lifted himself out of the seat and allowed her to sit. As her fingers touched the cool surface, whatever troubles that had been skipping through her mind vanished and ( Read more... )

Joanna heard the comm, and felt relief at first, before she registered who they were claiming to be. That was really a cruel joke. So not funny. Stilling, she tried to compose herself to give a response to the vessel in question, her Daddy and Papa's last words echoing through her.

She half snarled as she answered. "This is Ensign Joanna McCoy and that is not funny, Federation vessel."

When the reply came back, she had to listen a second time to make sure she wasn't going crazy. Joanna McCoy. That wasn't even possible. She had spoken with Joanna just weeks ago, passed on a video to her father of a tiny little thing, complete with bouncing curls and the gappy smile that one would expect from an eight year old. There were child-geniuses, but not even Chekov made Ensign at eight.

"I assure you," she replied, her jaw set firm. Whatever person was playing this sick joke, she wanted no part of it. "This is no joke. I will repeat myself again. What is your name and rank? Are you even Starfleet?"

"Ensign Joanna Kathleen McCoy, with John Grimm, civilian," Joanna said hotly. "And I heard the Enterprise blow up myself, with my fathers both on board so whatever sick joke you think you're pulling ma'am, I suggest it cease."

"Blow up?" Nyota repeated, half to herself and half to the other person on the line. For a moment she simply looked around the Bridge, as if assuring herself that this was real, that the ship hadn't blown up. How could it? And how the hell was this person Joanna, when she knew that Jo McCoy was all the way back home, tucked up in bed with her favorite teddy and a picture of her father on the nightside table.

"I have no idea what you're talking about, but I assure you the U.S.S Enterprise did not blow up. And I have no idea what kind of game this is, but you are not Joanna McCoy."

And then, a brief pause. She thought back to the spar she had witnessed, to all the people that kept just appearing around them, like they were a center of gravity in which all these liked entities were drawn.

"What's the year?" she questioned.
