The much delayed Dragon*Con recap post

Sep 28, 2009 22:01

Ok, so I'm three weeks late with this, but I figure better late than never, right? And in my defense I did start a new job the day after I got back, so I've been busy.

Dragon*Con was a crazy whirlwind of panels, friends, fabulous costumes, huge crowds of people, and lines. Lots and lots of lines.

The main reason I went to the con was to meet up with the 'Moose Crew' in person - fellow Battlestar Galactica fans that I've been hanging out with online for over a year. While not everyone could make it, most of us did, and it was great to have so many of us in one place, especially since two of them came from Ireland to join us. Everyone was just as cool in person as they are online and since there were 8 of us from the crew along with 5 honorary moose, there was always at least one other person doing what I wanted to do :)

Dragon*Con is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. It was hard to take it all in at first, but I think I got the hang of it by the end of the weekend. Four host hotels packed to the gills with as much scifi and gaming that you can imagine. Not to mention at least five *official* overflow hotels and you have the 30k+ people that invade Atlanta every Labor Day weekend. It's bascially like the world's biggest geek party.

The main thing that I did was attend a bunch of panels with scifi guests from some of my favorite shows - Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dr. Horrible, Dollhouse and Star Trek. There was also a Walk of Fame for you to get authographs and photos with the stars, Dealer Rooms selling all kinds of scifi swag, a parade through downtown Atlanta, live and video gaming, contests, and parties galore.

Some highlights from my weekend:
*Seeing Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner in basically *the* panel of the con first thing Friday. Totally hilarious despite the fact that I wasn't much of a fan of Star Trek the original series. I also got to see Patrick Stewart which was a treat since Next Generation was my first real scifi show.
*Seeing and singing along to Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog and Buffy's Once More with Feeling with live action players.
*Seeing many of my favorite BSG actors in various panels and getting a group picture with some of them.
*The fact that the con had a separate Joss Whedon track to talk about all of his awesome work (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, Dollhouse).
*Running into some of the stars in my hotel. I rode in the elevator with Luciana Carro (Kat from BSG) twice and ran into Ron Glass (Shepard Book from Firefly) in the lobby of the hotel one night. Also apparently one of the actors from Babylon 5 was staying three or four doors down from us.
*Meeting up with some of the other BSG shippers and hanging out before the pretty of lame (BSG) Colonial Fleet Party.

Most of all it was great to have so many cool people to share the experience with. It was a whirlwind, but a very fun one and I'd love to be able to do it again :)

I have lots of pictures (some mine, some from friends) that I'd like to post at some point, but not tonight.
