I just finished Catching Fire (Book 2 of the Hunger Games) last night and my mind is a swirl with questions -
So Haymitch is part of the resistance? Does that mean that some of his behavior has been an act? How much? What's been real? All of the drunkenness can't have been a ruse, but maybe most of it has come from wanting to overthrow the Capital and not being able to. Or maybe that's just the perfect cover. Anything is possible at this point.
How long has the resistance been growing? Did they pick Katniss to be the Mockingjay or was that just the spark they needed to get things started? I'm dying to know who's involved, if people in the Capital other than Plutarch are helping them and if they have a plan for how to subvert and overthrow the Capital, perhaps from within.
What happened to Cinna? I always liked to think that he was part of the resistance somehow. He seemed to understand what was going on with the tributes so much that in Book 1 I wondered if he might have been from one of the Districts and had infiltrated the Capital. In Book 2 he just kept getting cooler, and the Mockingjay costume was awesome even though I knew that it would surely get him punished. I hope that he is ok somewhere, but I really don't know if that's possible. He's only one person and we don't know of anyone else who has subverted the Capital and gotten away with it, other than Katniss.
How did the viewers see the games end? Did they pretend that Katniss, Finnick, and Beetee were dead, which is why they were picked up hovercraft? Was there a 'winner'? It had to have influenced things in the districts if the games did not go as planned, but we never see any of that. I'm hoping they go into this in Book 3.
Who is in District 13 and just how advanced are they? In my fantasy, they go underground after the Dark Days and work on advancing their technology and helping the other districts however they can. They have at least one hovercraft and seem to know how to get in to get Katniss and get back to District 13. How that will playout remains to be seen.
Overall I have to say this isn't quite what I was expecting the book to be. Before I read the book, I thought that Katniss and Co would escape to the woods and join some sort of fledgling resistance, but the prospect of an organized resistance possibly orchestrated by a strong District 13 is much more satisfying. It means that they might have a chance of winning. The one thing that I was expecting was for Plutarch to figure into a resistance somehow after he showed Katniss the mockingjay on his watch. Them saving Katniss at the end of the book was kind of what I had in mind, but not in such an organized way - involving Plutarch, Haymitch, other tributes and who knows how many others. I'm glad she survived, but poor Katniss. I think I might feel like a pawn too. Although I was very relived to see Gale on the hovercraft at the end of the book. At least some of the people she loves are safe. I have this sinking feeling that now that Peeta's gone, she's going to go back to wanting what she can't have - this time, Peeta. Still on Team Gale here, although as Gale says in the book, "I wish it was easier to hate him." Peeta's such a good guy, it's hard to see him suffer anything, even not being able to be with Katniss which is what he really wants.
I'm still trying to process a few things, but the one thought I keep having is - is it August 24th yet? I've got to find out how this all ends.
And now it's time for me to head to
Good_Hunting_HQ to see what some of my fellow K/L shippers thought of the book months ago when they read it. Totally behind the curve here.
