Potential Cosplay for Dragon*Con

May 14, 2013 21:39

This Labor Day I will once again be heading to Atlanta, GA for Dragon*Con. It's the geek highlight of my year - panels with my favorite scifi stars, seeing my online friends in person, and being at a place where even if not everyone shares my specific geek interests, everyone at least gets it ( Read more... )

I'm not a Dr Who watcher, so I can't contribute to discussion of costumes, but "HI!"

I can say I wore a wig last year, and it was kinda hot, but my issue was more keeping it from slipping, my own hair is superfine and the pins didn't keep it in place. you might have more luck than me.

Hi! Well I'm looking for general costuming advice too - how to find pieces, how close to the actual in show piece is good enough, etc. The only costume I've done thus far I just had to get in the right vicinity to work, so looking for specific pieces is new to me.

Good to know about the wigs. I haven't thought too much about hair so far, but a wig is one option.

*waves* Hi!!

First, wrong place, but I got your comment on chapter four and it's a great one. Thank you! Will try to reply with some questions this weekend. :)

On to River...have you considered maybe going with her outfit from the end of the Silence in the Library storyline? It's light and airy so might be wearable in the heat of Georgia. And shouldn't be too hard to find pieces for either. I should also mention I'm partial to those episodes...they're my favorite River ones.

No worries. Definitely want to help if I can :)

I hadn't considered that. Just found one pic of it, but may have to re-watch the end of Forest of the Dead to see more details. Definitely great episodes. Ironically they were the last River epis I watched since I started with Eleven and then worked my way back to Nine and Ten. So River's scene at the end of the episode just broke my heart. *sniffle*

It might be easier to find a fifties-style green halterneck dress to do a 50s spin on the Day of the Moon dress? With a thick brown belt and some sort of gun holster? That could work. You could take liberties with the shoes because HEAT, I think...

Haven't decided if I want to do classic River or to do a 50's spin. Still trying to figure out the best way to search for specific dress types online. Google search got me lots of pictures of stuff that I couldn't buy and Amazon search didn't have a lot of vintage looking stuff. One of the hang ups is how close does the color have to be to the on show dress. Definitely need some sort of belt and gun + holster for a proper River costume. Luckily I have some time. And the boots - hadn't even thought that those could be hot. Will have to ponder that some...

*waves* Almost forgot my id and password.

No real thoughts on the matter as I'm still in geeky t-shirt mode myself. Although I'd love to do a full steampunk outfit one day, but the pesky heat is definitely a factor.

I'm hugely intimidated by steampunk, but I love the look :)

I assume you saw this post (http://www.therpf.com/f24/river-song-day-moon-doctor-who-scratch-build-157613/) where this person is sewing this dress ( ... )

Yes, have come across that post. Kind of makes me wish I could sew, but it sounds like a huge pain. If you can sew though, you can get exactly what you want, assuming you have the skills.

Yes, searched on Modcloth, but no joy. Found some key words that have gotten me much closer to what I want. Now just have to find something that will fit me.
