If I may suggest it, have you considered using something like foam padding? Open cell, if you like, or something closed cell like one of those closed-cell sleeping pads used under sleeping bags by campers, hikers, backpackers ( ... )

Thanks, I had considered foam but decided it would be too expensive and that I wouldn't have the skill necessary to do... whatever it is I'm trying to do. I'm just making this up as I go along! If this is a spectacular failure, I will have to look into the foam. :)

I know foam costs a packet.

You make me laugh, you know, describing yourself as "fluffy." The "fluffy" ladies I could name make you look seriously anorexic, and those ladies themselves selected the "fluffy" adjective.

It seemed extra-appropriate, what with all the "fluff" drifting around my house as I trim poly batting to fluff out the form. :)

Have you considered using felt to mock-up the regimental? It would probably act similar to the final fabric, but be cheaper.
