Cloak closures - Blog post

I finally finished a new blog post! It's on the fascinating subject of Cloak Ties. I think I've had some insight, so race on over there and read and let me know what you think!

That little bit of tie, ribbon or tape in image #4: assuming it's a drawstring (and with such a short end showing, that seems highly plausible), could it be for the front edge of the hood?

The old woman spinning silk (image #6, I think?). I notice that the ties of whatever she's wearing over her bodice but under her cloak twist round each other only once before passing behind her torso on their own sides, i.e., right tie under the right arm, left tie under the left arm.

"could it be for the front edge of the hood?"

That's a good idea - I hadn't thought of that. Though it seems like they might get tangled if they came out next to the other ties?

"twist round each other only once"

It appears the same thing happens in Sanby's "Cries" picture, too. I can see how this might take yet more of the weight off the chest if the ties are pulling against each other. Maybe. Definitely needs some experimenting!

I doubt that they would. You see how much shorter the ends of the drawstring for the front edge of the hood is (assuming, for the sake of discussion, that that's what it is we're seeing); I would expect that the ties for the cloak are probably wider and/or of a different material, and that they are definitely longer. Even if the hood's drawstring were pulled and tied to keep the hood close about the head and face, I doubt those ends would tangle with the ties of the cloak ( ... )

It is highly relevant to my interests. I did race over and enjoy the pictures. Thank you for writing it up. The idea of a little ribbon or tape, makes sense. Simplest way of dealing, probably. And it obviously worked.

The sheer elegance of the continuous tie design just makes it feel correct, to me. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you for this. I used the Mill Farm "pattern" (it's more of a description) to make mine and her solution to prevent strangulation was to put two ties in the front.

I think I might fix my cloak so I can tie it like this!

I wanted to let you know that I tried the cross-cross over the chest method of wearing my cloak this weekend and I love it! Not choaking myself, and I was still plenty warm. And I was able to pass it along when one of the other gals asked how to keep her cloak from choaking her.
I did get some pics taken of me wearing it like that, I'll get them up on my LJ in the next week or so :)

Did you attach new/longer ties? Thanks so much for trying it out. I can't wait to see if the pictures look like the prints!

I used the ties that were on it, which were just long enough to tie in a reef knot behind me. Made it tough to untie, so I do need to put longer ones on before my next wearing.

Here is a link to a pic of me wearing it that way (I have no idea how to imbed images in a comment).

So cool! It looks like it crosses at the same point shown in the engravings. Do you mind if I make a post in my journal showing your pic?
