I say stay with it.
This is a form of negotiation, and in any negotiation you have to realize who holds the high cards. In this one, the Museum does: they have something you want and they are in a position to insist on their format being followed.

I understand that you're eager for answers. Most museums are understaffed and under-funded and have different priorities than outsiders' research.

Just stay with it. That lengthy e-mail form doubtless looks interminable right now, but you'll get through it and it'll be all right.

I think instead of "form" I should have said "canned reply." It started with "we're often away from our desks" and was full of "Contact ____ dept. for ____ requests" and "Go to _____ link for _____ information." I was instructed that if the canned reply didn't address my enquiry to email again using "Follow Up" as the subject line.

I feel rather like a dumb hayseed who thinks their knowledge is much greater than it actually is, because I attempted to point out the presence of the blue resist fabrics in my email. Whoever reads it will either think, "What?" or "We know." I was attempting to hopefully establish a rapport with someone, but I would probably be lucky to even get a reply to my measurement question.

Perhaps I will try to send my email again using "Follow Up."

H'mm. I tend to continue to see this as a negotiation, perhaps because so much in life is, even, "Honey, did you remember to take the trash out?" (Another woman will of course recognize that as, "Honey, if you didn't remember to take the trash out, you should do it now because it needs to go out and because sooner or later this can and probably will become tense, unsatisfactory or even downright unpleasant if you don't.")

"Canned reply" works for me just as well as "form." And from what you've described it sounds like a form letter in e-mail medium. *shrug*
