While I don't quite have a dinosaur example, I do know what you mean about the kind of irrational sense of unreality that you get in an accident. On my way home for Thanksgiving I slowed down for a yellow light and came to a stop. When I looked in my rearview mirror I saw a semi truck coming full speed behind me in my lane, showing no indication of slowing down. I had ample time to move, but I didn't think it was really happening. The semi made a move to pass me in the left lane, and its trailer started to fishtail, but it managed to pass me and run through the stop light. The truck came so close that it made my car violently shake. I had trouble processing the fact that if the truck had not switched lanes fast enough I would have been a dead human pancake. Crazy.
