That sounds almost EXACTLY like something my mom would do. Something about the Funk kids man...they expect answers to questions that do not and cannot have answers at the time they're asked, and it's like...SHIT, get off my back.

jimmy sent her FOUR birthday cards for turning 50, all with little nasty sayings on them. we just got the last one. he got EVERYONE in his family to write something on it- either jack or jb, i can't tell, wrote "i'm having trouble in history, can you tell me about when you were a kid?" and jordan wrote "what kind of pet did you have, a dinosaur? He-He." He ended with "fifty maybe be nifty, but forty-six still kicks!"
it was really funny

anyway, i really don't know that much. but i have heard that allegheny is very sorority/fraternity based...like overly so. and since its really small almost everyone has to join. i dunno.
UMD seems like a really nice college. my aunt lives in maryland and knows a lot of people who went there and loved it. i mean, its nice to know that you have somewhere to transfer if you have to.
good luck!

Excuse me for saying this, but your mom is being really frikkin irrational.
Also, Clark is the college Robert's (Robert=my mom's bf) younger son went to. I'm pretty sure he enjoyed it for the year he was there. Unfortunately, he got kicked out for not meeting the academic standards of the school, even after being put on academic probation. Perhaps he was enjoying himself a little bit too much? But don't worry. There are other details associated with that, and I doubt it will happen to you. I can ask Robert for more details on the school though, if you'd like.
