I was watching a show a few weeks ago with Ina Garten where she made 2 sets of brownies - same recipe, but one had a small amount of instant coffee/espresso powder - all of her blind taste testers thought the ones with the coffee were much better even though none of them tasted a coffee flavor. Perhaps you could try a a tablespoon or so in take 4 and see if that puts them over the edge.
