HELP! Does anyone out there have any experience with sump pumps? We've been in this house for almost 10 years now, built from the ground up, and this is the first time we've had "noticeable trouble" with our sump pump. We also live out in the country and have a sump pump. Based on what Kenny read, he thinks the sump pump needs replaced.

well, bottom line, the thing was shot and the plumber installed a spiffy new one today. Now that I see how it is "done" I think I could do it myself next time with a little plumber's goo and a saw (for the PVC piping). This new one is whisper-quiet and sucks the water right out. He put a little trap door on it, so water doesn't back down into the basin of the sump pump well, so all should be good for many years to come. I figure there are few things to fool with in a house if you don't know what you're doing: electricity and plumbing are right up there on the "call a professional" list. Now we can rest easy through our thunderstorms and later, snow run-off.
