Gabriel sat in the passager side of the car, staring outside of the window. He felt exhausted, but he hasn't really been able to sleep. Everytime he closed his eyes he saw his mother's shocked face, scissors jetting out of her chest, and suddenly he would feel wide awake again

She nursed a cup of hot chocolate she'd bought from a convenience store before they set off--usually she'd buy a slushie, but she wanted something warm and comforting and sweet. By now, however, it was cold.
"Are you nervous?" she asked conversationally, just because she knew she would be. And because she was worried about him.

"He never wrote or called or anything. He just went to get cigarettes and never came back," He pursed his lips. "The oldest cliche in the book."

"You want me to come in with you?" she asked softly, wanting to know before they got there. She understood needing to do some things alone, and this seemed like one that had the potential to qualify.
