Virginia had been practically ecstatic when Gabriel asked if he could borrow the car to go the dance. Of course, he didn't tell her he was bringing a date, he just let her think he was going with a group of friends. It had taken a lot of pleading and smiles and promises all week, but Elle's Dad had finally relented and let her go to the dance. She might have told him it was with "Sandy and the girls" and had to go to great lengths to convince him "Gabriel was a dweeb that hated dances" to assure him the cause for all this over protection wasn't even going to be there, but it had worked, finally. Elle knew how to wear her Daddy down, if she really needed to do it. Really, Elle knew how to wear anybody down, but that was neither here nor there.

And so far, it had totally been worth it. She was wearing the perfect dress, and her hair was curled and pulled back into a loose, gorgeous ponytail (Elle thanked god for good hair days), and Gabriel was wearing jeans. And he'd done his hair. And he even danced with her--however awkwardly--to songs he didn't even like ( ... )

Jane was here and occasionally shot nasty glances at Gabriel and Elle, but really, he could care less. Elle was having a good time, and so was he in spite of himself, and that's all that really mattered in the long run. The rest was meaningless, not worth the worry.

Gabriel's arms were wrapped around Elle's waste and he pulled her in closer now. He leaned in to whisper back into her ear. "Fair enough, because I want to take that dress off of you later too."

She giggled and nuzzled her lips into the hollow of his throat. "I can't wait," she murmured breathlessly, snaking her hands around his torso and holding him tight. "But if it glares at me one more time, I might have to kill her," she added melodiously, nipping playfully at his neck with a smirk.

"Fine, but only if I get to kill the boy the next time he looks at us with his 'oh-woe-is-me-eyes,'" he chirped in reply, brushing a stray strand of her hair away from her face, tucking it behind her ear.
