In the ballroom, near the grand piano, there is an auburn-haired young man lying facedown on the floor in a smear of blood. The back of his shirt is crimson and there are three clear puncture wounds, one near each shoulder blade and another lower, dangerously near to his kidneys. Light is in a bit of trouble ( Read more... )

It's Light's luck that Doctor Pascal is on his way through the ballroom to visit Sophie for a check-up (and thus has his doctor's bag), and pauses. And immediately has his war-doctor face on.

"-- Don't be afraid," he tells the unconscious man, "I am a trained medical doctor."

He's taking his pulse, to start.

Light likes his luck right now. Not usually, but right now, most definitely yes. He hears a voice, somewhat distantly - everything's a bit blurry at the moment - and turns his head, fingers working against the floor, scrabbling a little. His heartbeat is slightly too fast and a little bit - fluttery, but still there.

Light turns his head to look at Pascal, or tries, though his muscles seize up in protest and he groans, faintly.

Fluttery but still there is good, and Pascal quietly (and efficiently) proceeds to examining Light's wounds.

Can has break down?

There are two fairly deep stab wounds marking his shoulders, one on each, symmetrical, like the base of wings. And that was the intention. The wounds are messy, the knife was twisted after stabbing in. The third is on his right side, just above his kidney but it's missed everything vital. There's just a lot of blood.

Light makes a faint sound like he's trying to say something again, and his hand grasps for nothing before he slumps again.

Assuming this is sometime later, Scheherazade will (again) be looking for her sensei, and worrying (again) about him, because he (again) missed language class.

And this is really not like Light.

This is why there's a timid young Persian lady doing something very inappropriate, and poking her head in to his bedroom, which she's never visited before.

"-- Raito?"

He would not have missed if he could not absolutely help it. And the door is unlocked; Light is in bed on his stomach with the sheets pulled up and even paler than normal. He doesn't look very well; looks miserable, really. And forces his eyes open when he hears her voice, probably about half sedated.

"I...missed again, didn't I," he murmurs, a touch blearily. And sounds...rueful, mostly.

He really didn't plan this. He swears.

"Yes," she murmurs, and just opens the door a little wider. "May I come in?"

She's shy about this - it's really not appropriate, and she's worried, and well, there were words last time they spoke, and --

And well. Let's not go there, aside from the fact that she's extremely concerned for her friend. Inordinately so.

He lets his eyes close and doesn't lift an arm to wave her in, just says (slightly muffledly) "Mmmhm, that's fine." Don't mind him, really, feeling a bit dopey at the moment. Also frustrated and in pain, but those two have faded to the back of his head with a little help.

Schery, he is inordinately concerned about you, too. Just so you know.

Assuming this is later in the evening, there is a knock on the jamb of Light's door, then a cultured voice asks, "Might I come in?"

And there is an all too familiar pale man standing there. An energy vampire asking for an invitation to enter. Could it be any more cliche? Or unwelcome?

Light is not exactly supposed to be on his feet at this point, but he is nothing if not stubborn, and supporting himself on counters lets him keep moving and not think too much. And thinking too much is definitely not something he wants.

(The painkillers he is half high on probably help too.)

He stops when he hears that voice, though, freezes, really, and stares at the door.

"What for?" He manages to ask, voice calm, casual. He doesn't know if Aramat went to him already. Doesn't know the situation in full. And that makes him uneasy and right now he has nothing, not even his full physical capabilities...

Not good.

"You don't look well and it would be against my duty as a physician if I didn't offer my assistance," he says, stepping across the threshold. "Might I ask what happened to leave you in this state?" he asks, his concern genuine, his tone concerned yet professional.

Light stiffens as Muraki steps in, and pulls back, muscles tensing. "I've already been tended to," he says, not quite sharply. "So thank you, but your concern is unwarranted and I would sooner you waited for an invitation before stepping into my room in the future?"

The note of pain is tight in his voice, though, and he can feel his stitches tugging. He doesn't want to be on his feet, not really.

Much later, perhaps late at night, Ryuk slides into the room through a wall, perching himself on the desk. "Hey... what the hell happened to you, Light? Yah look like a truck hit yah," he says. It's been a while since he checked on his pet human, and he's about due.

His timing couldn't be more worse, though.

Yeah, Light would really rather not deal with his former shinigami. Unfortunately, he is stuck lying on his stomach, too tired at this point - and drugged up on painkillers - to move very much.

(He still resents that 'pet' thing. Of course.)

"Ryuk," he says, with an air of exasperated lack-of-patience rendered somewhat ineffective by the way his words slur together, "I am not in the mood right now. I was resting."

"Awww..." he says, pretending to sound disappointed. "Yer hurt, an' don't ...friends visit each other when they ain't feelin' well?" he asks, putting an odd weight on the word 'friend'. "What happened, anyway? Vampire bitecha?"

He knows about Pandora, but he's not going to let on of course.

Light gives him a bleary look of dubious at the word 'friend.' Dubious might be kind. Perhaps skeptical is closer. "I suppose. They also know when to leave well enough alone."

A pause. "No. What would make you think that?" Just a little too flatly, and he shifts, and then winces. "I was...stabbed," he allows, reluctantly.

And it wasn't his fault dammit.

Sometime around dusk, Misa comes a knocking. She's heard about what happened to Light from some hazel eyed lady with a strange grin on her face, she is really getting concerned.

"Light? Can I come in?...Please?"

Light winces. From his bed, where he has been mostly laid up all day, because he is not sure he really has the energy to deal with Misa at the moment. At the same time, though...sympathy is nice. And she might be able to get things for him. Like a book. He can't sleep and is getting really, really bored.

"--sure, Misa. Hold on, the door's locked. I'll have to get it."

Whee, paranoia. And Light drags himself to his feet and mostly with the aid of walls and flat surfaces, makes it to the door and drags it open, though he is breathing hard, pupils dilated with lingering pain as he looks at her, eyes half closed.

"...hey."

He has every right to be. (Aramat could pick open his lock at anytime and finish him off in his own bed, but she isn't.)

"Light!" She immediately rushes over to help him back to his bed, if she knew he was this messed up, she wouldn't have made him get up. "I'm so sorry you had to get up... is anything you need?"

He would flail her off, if he could flail, but accepts the help with a sigh and a flick of his eyes skyward. "No, Misa, I'm fine," he says, though in a tight, carefully modulated voice that is designed to disguise any discomfort. "It's better than it looks."

Really, he swears. Except how it isn't. But don't tell anyone!
