New Years + Late Resolutions + Avatar + .... + .....

Well, things have been hectic between the Xmas/New Year celebration and work (we don't have xmas holidays over here, but don't feel too sorry for me I have Chinese New Years in a few weeks), so I've pretty much been neglecting my LJ. The last couple days I've been considering tackling my F-List, but the sheer magnitude of it is quite daunting so I ( Read more... )

The Road is brutal. Enjoy!

Good luck on all the resolutions. They seem like attainable goals.

I've liked it so far. Haven't quite got to the horror yet, but I like the atmosphere he's built and his writing style is certainly interesting.

Hope I can improve this year is my main thing, regardless of sales.

I loved The Road. My book club hated it. But it's the book we talked about most (still talk about.) It's so bleak and horrific a commentary on humanity as a whole, but strangely uplifting when taken on singular levels. I'd be curious to know what you think of it when you're finished.

Cool, I'll let you know how I like it. I've heard Blood Meridian is his best. Have you read that one?

Sounds like a great plan, Justin. It's up here now, so we'll hold you to it.

Ha, thanks Sophy! Yeah, the reading one is the hardest for me to keep. Luckily, I end up reading a bunch of books with my students or it would be even worse.

Hey, that's a good idea, assign them sf books to read and writer essays on.

For me the reading part is the easiest, though lately I hadn't had much time.

Haha, yeah it's awesome, so far we read Fahrenheit 451, Life of Pi, Lord of the Flies, Wicked, The Odyssey, and the Good Earth. My problem with the reading part is I usually get caught up on one book and don't want to give up on it (even though I'm not really enjoying it). I think I'm gonna change my habit and shelve books that aren't working for me.

I've always wanted to try an audio book. Maybe I should give it a shot one of these days (but not in the car I guess, haha!). So far I'm pretty hooked on The Road and it is far from difficult reading. What with the terse dialogue and McCarthy's style the pages just fly by. Haven't quite got to the brutal parts yet, but there certainly a sense of foreboding.

Those goals sound sound. Learning to write is a looong and winding process, but you seem to understand where you need to improve. Good luck with doing it!

Thanks, Jakob! Yeah, I've found though that knowing your problem is really just the beginning. Hope I can make some improvement this year.

PS: I missed last Q of WOTF, boo!

This is me, too, with writing :). I want to take the focus off of trying to get published; heck, I'm so lame at that aspect of it all, anyway, that it just seems silly.

I mean, it's there, and I'm looking forward to it all again, but not as the focus. Good luck with this; I'm curious to see how it all works out :) The Further Adventures Of...I suppose *g*

I think we lose focus on the actual writing in all this submission/rejection madness. I'm still gonna submit, but not agonize over it so much this year. Well, in theory anyway. Hope it works!
