I love Donna

Apr 12, 2008 21:30

Oh my god. Could Donna really get any better. She shot ahead of every other companion last week and this week she shot ahead of herself!

RTD I love you. I will almost forgive you for the end of TW for this. Almost....

Can you explain the Donna love? I've only watched the first Dr Who episode from last week, and that was the first time I've seen Catherine Tate. Then I watched a "Children in Need"(?) special (I think that's what it was, where she was acting as a school girl) and I didn't like her at all. :-(

Does she take getting used to? Should I perservere? Did you like her straightaway?

Straight away. I really loved the comic relief sketch as well. Not a huge fan of Catherine Tate's comedy but she is utterly wonderful in DW4.

Do you actually like Gwen as a character though? I just wonder if we have different taste in women? I just think she goes wonderfully well with DT.

I don't mind Gwen ... it's the googoo eyes she makes at Jack that I don't like. :D

And the way JB seems to have way more chemistry with Eve than he does with Gareth. :-(

Catherine just didn't appeal to me. Sometimes I get these irrational dislikes. I'll watch the Dr Who episodes later in the series with Captain Jack, and see what I think then.

It helps to see more Doctor Who, with Rose and Martha (which I'm guessing you've not, from the sound of it; pardon if I'm mistaken), because I think a large part of Donna's appeal is the contrast with previous companions, especially in the way she refuses to treat the Doctor with the reverence that his previous companions have. In Pompeii, for example, when she basically tells him, "Fuck you, you're wrong."

(I think JB and GDL have great chemistry, although JB and Eve are close friends and hang out.)

I haven't watched much of Dr Who, except the episodes with Captain Jack. There were three (I think) each with Rose and Martha, both of whom I quite liked. But that's such a tiny amount, given all the episodes I didn't see.

I know my daughter's b/f doesn't like the "new" Dr Who series at all, because of the "love" (is that too strong?) interest between the Dr and his companions. Apparently that wasn't evident at all in the "old" series and he felt it quite ruined these new episodes. Perhaps he might like Donna in that case. :-)

I'm not sure about JB and GDL - in all the behind the scenes extras I've watched, JB's always hanging around Eve, and I've not seen him with GDL at all. I just feel they don't have much in common and maybe that's coming through when I watch their appearances together on TW. I really want Jack/Ianto to develop, and without JB's enthusiasm, I'm not sure it's going to happen.

I just saw this week's DW episode and fucking LOVE Donna! She is exactly the right companion for the Doctor. I actually got chills when she was pleading with him to save someone/anyone...and when they were in the mountain and he told her the choice was Pompeii or the world and that they wouldn't survive - best scene ever on DW IMO.

Definitely. I feel the need to write to RTD and tell him how wonderful he is!!

I'm getting really really sad aren't I?!

Well, if you're "sad", you're in good company! There seems to be quite a few of us out there. LOL
If I tried to write a letter to RTD right now it would be a schizophrenic one that alternates between how great S4 of Who is and yelling at him about the finale of Torchwood and begging for much more Jack/Ianto. *g* (now who's the "sad" one? LOL)

To be honest the only worries I have about TW are that it's going to be dumbed down next series to fill in for lack of DW. Now if it were only going to be for one year I could cope as long as they made it more sci-fi, but I see no sense in making it a permanent kiddies programme.

I thought the end of S2 was perfect (sad as all hell, but beautifully done) and I like the J&I onscreen balance. I don't think GDL and JB could do a convincing full-on on screen job anyway and the BBCA site is filling in all the gaps in their relationship for me beautifully. I love it!
