Why do 4 out of 5 messages sent via Facebook get no response?

Because it is even less personal than just sending an email, which is already pretty impersonal. Also, you can't respond directly from your "you got a message" notification, like you have to go log into facebook to respond unlike receiving an email, which is relatively more direct.

I don't understand when people have your email address (or your phone number!), but still send messages via facebook.

I obviously think about this crap too much.

Anyway, Justin, how's it going? I miss you!

I guess a lot of the time I actually don't have people's e-mail, so it seems like messages sent through Facebook have become an acceptable substitute - and I am not placing wall posts in the same category, as I think they fall into a more informal category and don't require responses in most cases.

Maybe I'll just copy and paste the messages I sent into e-mails. I hope that doesn't seem too bitchy.

Also, the people you are sending it to might not get notifications in their email that they are getting messages.
