The High School Meme

as stolen from thejtrain

1) Who was your best friend?
A) I ran around with a crew of best friends, including: thejtrain, onehotmoma, Brian, the Miller twins, Mitch, David, Jessica, Tamara, Vanessa, etc. The crew fluctuated at times with members filtering in and out. By senior year, though, our little semi-nerd posse had expanded to include more members than I can recollect. I suddenly found myself surrounded by friends I'd never been close to during the three previous years of high school. Some of these were even members of the popular cliques. It was like being seniors served as a sort equalizer. I've lost touch with a lot of the main crew since then, but I still consider thejtrain and onehotmoma to be my best friends. I also still touch base with at least one Miller and David from time-to-time.

2) What sports did you play?
A) I didn't play on any of the school teams, but I played softball and basketball recreationally. I impressed my gym teacher so much during class my freshman year that he asked me to join the girls' basketball team. I seriously considered it. I even went home and talked to my parents about it; but as I was (and still am) only 5 feet nothing, I figured I'd spend more time on the bench nursing an injury than actually playing. I do regret not joining the softball team in school, though. I absolutely loved the sport, and I was pretty good at it, too.

3) What kind of car did you drive?
A) A 1988 white Chevy Corsica. thejtrain used to refer to our vehicles as the twin "ghost"mobiles.

4) It's Friday night, where were you?
A) Probably at thejtrain's playing board games or shooting pool. We also watched "Ren & Stimpy," listened to music, and just sat around shooting the breeze. If you couldn't find me there, chances were pretty good I'd be at home on the phone with one of the random guys in my life, such as Barry, Scotty or Kevin.

5) Were you a party animal?
A) Yeah, right. I didn't have my first drink until I was in college.

6) Were you considered a flirt?
A) Who didn't flirt at that age?

7) Were you in band, orchestra or choir?
A) I sang in the regular choir and show choir. I was also a member of the Flag Team. I think I was either Captain or Co-Captain my senior year.

8) Were you a nerd?
A) I'm not really sure if I was more nerd or more geek back then.

9) Did you get suspended/expelled?
A) No, but I do remember getting into trouble with our senior prom sponsor that year. I was a member of a youth organization created by our local bank. We were responsible for doling out funds to various organizations and activities within the school system. We had allocated funds to the prom committee to help sponsor the event, but the senior class president told us they had received so many donations that they no longer needed the entire amount they'd requested from us. So, we reallocated the funds elsewhere. A few days before prom, the sponsor called all the members of the bank organization into the teachers' lounge and read us the riot act. thejtrain and I ended up asking for permission to leave school early that day, so we could drive to the bank to explain the situation to our liaison officer. I can't remember if he ever apologized to us or not, even after the senior class officers explained the situation to him. The whole incident seems so utterly ridiculous now, but back then, we were really concerned we were going to get into major trouble.

10) Can you sing the fight song?
A) Yes

11) Who was your favorite teacher?
A) I don't think I really had one. I liked and respected almost all of my teachers for very different reasons.

12) School mascot?
A) The Bobcat

13) Did you go to prom?
A) Freshman year with Scotty (a senior)
Junior year with thejtrain
Senior year with Kevin (I met him during the Governor's Scholar program in 1993. I suppose you could say we had a summer fling, but we remained good friends for years after that. His
family drove him all the way from Grayson County just so he could escort me.)

14) If you could go back and do it over, would you?
A) I would relive the time in my life from June 1993 until graduation in June 1994. It was one of the best years of my life.

15) What do remember most about graduation?
A) I remember being first in line to enter the gymnasium. I remember reading the opening prayer. I remember the Millers giving the school principal the "Heil Hitler" sign as they walked off stage after receiving their diplomas. I remember hugging my friends and crying a lot. I remember feeling as though a chapter of my life was ending and a new one was beginning.

16) Where were you on senior skip day?
A) Natural Bridge State Park

17) Did you have a job senior year?
A) I didn't start my first job until after graduation.

18) Where did you go most often for lunch?
A) We really only had the school cafeteria.

19) Have you gained weight since then?
A) Goodness, yes. Hasn't everybody? I think I only weighed 98 pounds when I graduated.

20) What did you do after graduation?
A) Went home to spend time with the family.

21) When did you graduate?
A) June 5, 1994

22) Who was your senior prom date?
A) See answer to question #13.

23) Are you going to your 10-year reunion?
A) Been there. Done that. Helped organize it. Someone else can work on the 20th.

24) Who was your home room teacher?
A) Mr. Combs, more affectionately known as Brucey
