Slurrrrp!

I would describe Japan as a pretty polite culture. I would probably give them precedence if one of their mannerisms directly contradicted one from where I grew up. Where I grew up, it's not polite to make noise while eating. In Japan, it's pretty much rude not to. Here, you pick up the dishes off the table and shovel stuff into your mouth. You're ( Read more... )

Dad here... I was taught that the pointy ends were for my food, and the fat ends were for serving yourself... but maybe my teachers were more old-fashioned than yours.

Sounds like the chinese accent on japanese was a real test of your language skills. :)

re: pocky joke... sometimes it helps to allow yourself to fall for pranks... people like to know you can laugh at yourself.

Glad to hear the juggling meme is spreading... keep up the good work!

I've not seen anyone use the fat ends of the chopsticks at all... that seems like it would be similar to using the other end of your spoon or something. Maybe they do it differently in places like Osaka or Hokkaido, Japan is big.

I would have loved to have gotten the popper pockey, but it was a chance game. Just one of the sticks out of the whole box would trigger it, and I wasn't lucky enough to get it... oh well.

Hi Cordell! 2006in2006 July 25 2006, 06:33:44 UTC
We're just packing up to head back to Kansas City after the IJA festival, and saw your update. Sounds like you're having a fabulous trip!

Hey, remember you had a problem connecting your DS with our wifi router? We have a Netgear one at home (an 815 i think) that you said was causing the problem... know whether Linksys routers have the same flaw? We bought one to use during the event and it's getting shipped back to the house in KC.

I think this is the exact model we got, may be a slightly different model but that's the form factor.

sharing a 10' by 8' japanese hotel room with a 14 year old homo is not an experience I'd repeat in a hurry.

Did he try to hit on you or something?

I didn't know you hacked. (I think "hack" is the right term, anyhow. It's what all the super-good hackey-sackers at the festival said.) How long have you been doing that?

Yeah, I've been hacking for several years, but it's not too different from juggling a soccer ball.

Have you seen some of uncle Zain's hacking work? He's incredible...

I don't think I've seen Zain since I was thirteen.

i'd've been her favorite sucker...

we're home in KC again. nice to see what you've been up to, glad to hear you won the host-family lottery again! why don't you just ship home some of your stuff so you have room in your bags? (the books, i mean)...

wouldja bring me some of the odd pocky? the stuff you can't get here except on ebay?

you would have loved what all the japanese and taiwanese kids were doing at the festival... you'll see on the DVDs. we sure could have used your translation skillz, that's for sure!

how did you do on that test? are you taking classes at KU this fall? are you OK on money for now? let me know!

Yeah, I plan to ship a bunch of it. I should have shipped them a while ago, before the whole hotel fiasco. I hope the box with the books in it isn't too ridiculously heavy/expensive.

Odd pocky, I'll see what I can do. I've had some really good stuff, including Green Tea pocky and Lemon Cheesecake pocky.

Can't wait to see those DVDs! Even if I was there, my Taiwanese isn't quite up to snuff. Sorry. ;p

KU... I don't think so, not this year. First of all, it's far enough away that if I do go, I want to go as a full student (like be in a dorm or something), and second of all I'd have to change flight plans just to be there in time for the semester.

As for money, I've been kinda having to budget myself since my last Akiba run, but I can make it on what I have. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket or something, though, I'll be spending every yen I can. ;)

Actually, you can't this year. Application deadline was in April. You might want to check out the college's website pretty soon- you have to think ahead with college apps. If you're sure you want to go to KU, you might have a better chance of getting in as an early decision applicant, and the deadline for that is November 1.
