Some follow-up comments, because I can't resist talking Star Wars, particularly the issue of what went wrong with the prequels:
1. Believe it or not, Episode III was actually sort of an improvement on that score. At the least, Hayden Christensen (Anakin) was somewhat less wooden) and Ian McDiarmid, the Emperor and one of the most competent actors in the cast, got a lot to do.

3. Anakin in Episode I is played as a sweet little kid with just the tiniest hint of a dark side. Anakin in Episode II is a spoiled brat with no self-control or self-awareness. It's, um, not the most graceful transition. Again, believe it or not, Episode III is executed somewhat BETTER than what came before.
4. The story wasn't necessary, I guess, but it could have been interesting with better execution. Star Wars fans have speculated about the Clone Wars since 1977; a whole 'nother galatic conflict that was practically a blank slate! Too bad they, y'know, pretty much skipped right over the Clone Wars when plotting out the prequels
