[Meta] The misadventures of Crowley and Squirrel‬‏

Or: Dean and his search of brothers and fathers.

I've been writing my 10.01 review, enjoying the first real chilly day this year and a small thunderstorm when I got ditracted by Dean (what else is new?) and some thoughts about him and what lead him to his current state. Spoilers for the season premiere.

Wow, that's some good stuff. And conveniently color coded. XD It makes perfect sense.

Very good insight. I love how you've tracked this back through the years, and I hadn't really thought about the drastic affect of Bobby's death on Dean quite that way before, but yep, it makes a lot of sense.

"He doesn't want Sam around, either because deep down he still cares enough to stay away from him or because he knows Sam would either kill him or try to fix him." That sums up what I was thinking.

I do think it is interesting that although everyone and everything is saying Dean is a demon, he hasn't yet (to our knowledge) killed a human - though obviously his violent reactions in the bar, and outside, mean that may just be a matter of time.

I think Dean never really got over Bobby's death and hasn't been the same since. Not John, not Hell and not even Sam drove him into near alcoholism, it was the last straw for him.

I agree, I think there's more to demon!Dean than meets the eye. The fact the he hasn't killed any humans makes me think that even though he's a demon and his soul is corrupted it doesn't necessarily mean he lost himself and all sense of morality or that he's pure evil, we know from both Crowley and Cain that it's a little more complicated than that. Kinda makes me believe that he chooses to stay a demon to punish himself and that in the moment of truth he'd let Sam save him.

I just wonder how Sam will save him, because he can't exorcise Dean, and Cain only moved on because he handed the Mark to Dean...I do hope we get Cain back sometime this season too, he was awesome!

Me too! He was a fantastic character.
I've got a feeling Sam will need to find a way to contain Dean's demonic side rather than saving him. As you said - it's still Dean, he can't exorcise him - but maybe his demon part could be contained. That's the vibe I got from the (gorgeous) new title card with the demon trap.

Great post -- this makes a lot of sense!

I think it's interesting that it's when Crowley tries to step into the 'father' role -- stops treating Dean as an equal and starts issuing orders -- that Dean walks away from him. I'm not sure what it means, but I think it's interesting. ;) Also that Crowley's attitude is basically, 'I've done all this for you, therefore you should do as I say'. It's almost like Dean's attitude respecting Sam.

Very interesting points, both on Crowley's attitude and how Dean walked away when he started to try order him around!
I love that Dean looked almost bored with Crowley's speech. Demon or no demon, that's Dean he's messing with and he'd never liked taking orders unless they were from John. I hoped Crowley's plan would come back to bite him in the ass and so far I'm very happy with where it's going.

Yes! It's strange -- I always think of Sam as being Dean's Most Important Person, but John is actually less replaceable.

I hoped Crowley's plan would come back to bite him in the ass and so far I'm very happy with where it's going.

The end of the bromance isn't going to be pretty, is it? ;)

I still think Sam comes first. At least when Dean's human...

If I didn't like Crowley so much I'd probably be hoping for either Sam or Dean to kill him (or should I say kill him dead?). ;)

He lets Crowley tag along because even as a demon, Dean doesn't want to be alone.

I think you are on to something here!

Thanks. :)
I kinda hope I'm right, mostly because I really want to see Crowley finding out Dean's not there in the morning and realizing Dean really isn't his pet.
