A whip cracked. Pain exploding across bare skin as he grit his teeth, unwilling to cry out. Another whip crack followed not too far after that one. No idea how many it was now.
Chains rattled as he shifted, shackles biting into his wrists as he attempted to brace himself while the punishment continued.
"Now," A woman's voice, cold and cruel. "What have I told you about leaving headquarters without permission little bird?"
"I'm not... I'm not supposed to leave. Unless I have a contract."
"That's right. Good boy." The voice purred. "Little birds shouldn't fly free of their cages. It's a cold cruel world out there. Why there are so many ways a worthless child like you could die. At least here you're fed and clothed, yet despite all our charity you just have to be such an ungrateful little brat. That's why you need to be punished."
He laughed bitterly and the words come out before he can stop himself. "Why should I be grateful to a vulture like you?"
A pause. "Insolent child!"
CRACK!!!
Kaito bolted up right with a strangled cry and just sat there for a moment, gasping for breath. It took him a few moments to realize he wasn't in his bedroom at home (or his bunker at headquarters) and a few minutes more to remember where he was.
Once he did though he slumped down onto the bed again biting back a curse. That had felt almost real. It had been a long time since the nightmares, which were really memories, had been that vivid. What had triggered that? Maybe it was that older Conan seeing his scars...
"Dammit I need to get out of here." He sat back up and climbed out of bed, heading out of his room to find something to do. He didn't care if it was the middle of the night. It wasn't like he slept much anyway.
