I've heard many pastors say that they don't advise more than a 6 month engagement. (Of course that is on the basis that pre-marital sex is a sin and most couples can't wait more than 6 months.) Secular logic says take up to 2 years to plan your wedding. After all, your first born would look cute as a ring bearer or flower girl. :)
Personally, I was engaged for 2 1/2 years because I got engaged in the middle of school and wanted to graduate first. I basically did nothing with planning until about 6 months before.
And then there was my former priest who remarked that more couples put more effort into planning and thinking about the wedding than the marriage.
Try to enjoy it. It is an exciting stage of your life.
