Proposal...

May 04, 2009 11:48

In light of the inability for written internet media to properly convey sarcasm for comedic purposes, I propose using the section punctuation mark (§) as the punctuation mark to denote sarcasm going forward (You can put this into your type by pressing Alt+0167).

Example: "Oh yeah, that's such a good idea.§".

What do you think?

I love it. It's also so pretty.

It's such a severely underused punctuation mark in today's world (outside the legal profession)!

Because the symbol requires some forethought to write, it forces you really think about whether you want to be sarcastic or not! :)

(try holding the ALT key, then while holding the ALT key type the numbers 0167. That should produce the symbol)

I disapprove.

People not understanding you're being sarcastic is most of the fun of being sarcastic. Plus a lot of sarcasm is actually just condescension so for that I'd recommend ك (the Arabic K for "k"ondescension).

Since pretty much everything I say is sarcastic or condescending (though sometimes I stray into dismissive), should your system be adopted one should just assume those before any sentence I utter.

Damn. Meant to end with "Except for two of these last five."

Hmmm. Perhaps a "not-sarcasm" puncuation mark would be appropriate for you? How does "¤" feel to you for that purpose?
