In life we don’t get what we want, we get in life what we are. If we want more we have to be able to be more, in order to be more you have to face rejection. -Farrah Gray
Shade had been in and out of consciousness for weeks, not moving from the bed except to curl up in pain and lean over to puke on the floor. It was similar to a druggie going through detox. Only he wasn't going through detox. Something was crawling inside of him, growing and fighting with the darkness that he held there.
His soul - ripped out in a matter of minutes - was being forced back into his body slowly. Painfully.
"This isn't right," Amy murmured with a sigh. She sat above where Shade lay on the bed, him curled up like a child, her pressing a damp rag to his forehead. "It's not supposed to be like this."
Liam sat on the opposite twin bed, his feet to the floor and his elbows to his knees. His hands were running through his hair tightly. "How is it supposed to be?"
"I don't know," she said in exasperation. "I've never seen a half demon regain his soul, but this doesn't feel right."
"Well," Adam sighed and looked up at her. "Whoever decided to fix him must want him to earn it." He shook his head, eyes narrowed. "I hardly see this as saving his soul."
"The angels wouldn't make it easy."
"What makes you think it was angels?" Liam asked.
"Because it is," a voice said. The two demons looked over at the young woman who had appeared in the room. "Hello," she nodded.
Amy's brows rose as she looked the girl over. "You're too pretty to hang around here. Angel or not."
Camille looked Amy over herself and bent her head in a single nod. "Amy."
"Don't believe we've actually met." Amy got to her feet and stepped over to the girl, hands on her hips. "Though you seem to know me. Who are you?"
"I go by Camille now," she said, raising her eyes to meet Amy's.
A smirk spread on Amy's lips. "Well, you're just a baby angel aren't you, honey?"
"I'm here to watch over Shade, not cause trouble."
"Not cause trouble?" Liam jumped to his feet and walked over, his hand already out - charging up a fireball. "Do you see what you bastards are doing to him? And you call us demons?"
Amy reached out for Liam's wrist, pulling it down to her side. "So what's the plan, honey? Torture his soul back inside of him, hope he comes out the wiser and joins your side? Soul or not - he's sill a demon."
"He also has a pure light inside of him," Camille nodded, speaking softly. "His mother, her sisters - they were good witches. They have done a lot for us and he is a part of them."
Liam's hand was flexing tightly between himself and Amy. She was still holding his wrist, her thumb brushing his skin gently to calm him. "He's a part of no one but himself," Liam grumbled. "Your 'light' abandoned him when he was a baby. Why do you care so much now?"
Camille shook her head while keeping her eyes on Liam's. "I don't know all the answers, Adam. I only do as I'm ordered. I do know that there is good inside of Shade, and without his soul he can't reach that goodness."
Liam opened his mouth to speak, but Amy cut him off. "His name is Liam. And I would suggest you not follow your orders so blindly. No telling where they're coming from."
"They come from The Almighty. He does what's best for His children."
"Time for you to go," Amy said with a glare. "I'd hate to release my friend here, and you really don't want to see what I can do to that pretty face of yours."
Camille stepped back not wanting to cause any more trouble. She walked over to where Shade lay on the bed, the other two demons close behind her. She leaned over Shade and whispered in his ear a soft prayer. Then she stood up and left without looking over her shoulder.
Liam looked down at Shade as his friend started to relax more in his sleep. Amy sighed and stepped close to him. "I wish they would just let it be done," Liam muttered.
"I know, darling," Amy said softly, moving a hand to Liam's shoulder. "It'll end soon."
"And what do we do about the angel-brat?"
"That will end soon as well," she assured him. With Shade sleeping soundly, she pulled Liam by the arm and had him sit beside her on the free bed. He sighed deeply and turned towards her, resting his face in her neck. Her arms went around him and held him as she carefully watched Shade sleep.
