I need more tools. My current equipment is inadequate for the disassembly of the rear brake saddles of the current Volvo, and I need to replace the brake pads.

I need to amend that. I do have quite adequate tools to disassemble the said brake saddles. But if I do that, they will not be possible to assemble into road-safe configuration again. ( Read more... )

I'm surprised that you have a Volvo.

I took you more for a Volkswagon-kind of guy.

Actually, I have both! A Golf to use as a shopping bag, and the Volvo to show the neighbours.

If the Volvo is in the driveway for the sake of the neighbors, why does it need functional brakes?

To be able to take it occasionally to my parents' driveway.

Are they drum brakes or disc brakes?

There exists a specific tool for getting that last spring in a drum brake assembly back into place. I don't remember what it's called, but it looks a lot like a dentist's implement of torture care.

Disc. I understand this is one of the first Volvos with four-wheel disc brakes.

My problem right now is that I can't reach the bolts that hold the brake saddle together. I will worry about squeezing it together when the time comes; now I need to get it to burst apart.

Is it a 144? I'm a faithful Volvo owner - have had a 122, several 140 series, a 740, and now I'm driving a 245. If I had more money, I'd have anothe 120 and a P1800. And yes, those 140 brakes are a beast to get apart.

Really, one always needs more tools.

It's a 460. The 200 series models would be more attractive, but this was cheap.

In general, tools are good. I once got propositioned because I carried a needlenosed vise grip in my handbag. Eew. He didn't see the convertible mini screwdriver.

I'm not in favour of tools (or things) so specialised that they only do one thing (or require a tool that only does one thing).

If it's not expensive and you're planning to keep the car long enough, shrug and buy it. If you're not going to use it more than once and it is more expensive than the job done by garagistas (my word for mechanics, whom I regard with suspicion until proven competent, fair, and honest), let the pros have at it.

There's always use for a ratchet set. I think.

A metric ratchet set that swore it would withstand pounding by a hammer was one of my first tool purchases. (expensive) I was 17 and still have it and have pounded on it numerous times. S-K works.

Definitely a "gotta have". One of the reasons I drove to work when I could walk was to have my tool box available, and locked up. That and I had to be readily dispatched. Managers do that in small businesses.
