If you are against small kittens being skinned and used for hats, post this sentence in your livejournal.

*blink*

I have two questions:

1. What about large kittens?

and

2. Wouldn't it be useful to specify whether or not the kittens were being slaughtered specifically for the purpose? After all, I kinda figure that what a person chooses to do with their dead kitten is up to them...

*grin*

There's less patchworkery with the larger animals.
And the item 2. does not apply. Speak just to PETA, or even better, ALF-type people.

I loathe the guilt-tripping that these "if [k] then post this sentence" reek of.

Besides, the posting of a generalised concept is totally on the level of bumperstickering to quiet your conscience.

I was going to say...

Is this a response to the same sort of thing as the "wear red if you support the troops" or similar sorts of empty gestures that are prevalent in my unfortunately fortunate section of the world?

No, this time the trigger was actually not quite as vacuous as that. These LJ things that often express worthwhile ideas of letting people know that you think highly of them can be annoying, though, on their own level.

Well of course I am. I mean, how inefficient is that? If you have to pick out specifically the smaller ones, that's a lot of work for no particular benefit. Just skin all the kittens - it's much faster and easier.

But is it not even more efficient not to let the litter grow to much more than the regulation size, so that you minmize the feed cost and maintain uniformity of size of the raw material to the production machinery.

Possibly. I feel there's an optimization problem here - obviously conformity is a good thing, but so is minimizing waste. It may also be that it's simply better to design the machinery to be more tolerant - it already has to deal with quite a lot of uncertainty, a little more might not hurt.

Clearly more study is needed.

Somewhere around 14 wks., kittens stop being so fluffy, and take on the typical cat coat, so there is an optimal stage for harvest if fluffy kitten fur is desired. Longhaired kittens develop guard hairs later than shorthairs, so could be larger. Hmm.
