A WHO survey published in the British medical journal The Lancet calls depression "a non-fatal disease".

I'm afraid not. Untreated depression leads unfortuntately often to death.

Quite. My cholesterol typically goes wild during depressive episodes, blood pressure tends to elevate, and body weight may increase or decrease significantly. All of which are somatic risks.

I've thought seriously of acquiring some livestock. But what with the irregular business trips and my unwillingness to let non-family (and even some family) to roam about my lands, I've thought not.

Huh. I wouldn't have thought to compare depression to an RSI; I usually equate it with diabetes ("your body chemistry is screwed up") or epilepsy ("a part of your brain is broken").

I'll have to think about whether that works for me.

Well, it is a personal thing. For me depression and burnout tend to walk hand in hand, thus I perhaps overassociate the RSI aspect of burnout with the depression. In the more general case, indeed, it is more a matter of body chemistry being wonky.

Probably depends how early in life it starts whether the comparison to RSI seems apt.

Actually, I would be unlikely to seek treatment for either, though if either could be treated with a single steroid shot and instructions to do less with the affected part like my tennis elbow (which may have come from grading or from shoving doors open), I might.
