Salzburg

My school sponsored a day trip to Salzburg, just a mere 2 n' a half train trip just over the border of Austria.

It was a direct ride to the Salzburg Bahnhof, the main train station, and when I visit a new city I just get a general bearing as to which way to go and start wandering around. I don't plan it out or use a guidebook. I have to say, the area around the Salzburg Bahnhof was a pretty drab and depressing looking urban area. Asides from Austria's Communist clubhouse, I didn't see much to talk about. "This is Salzburg?!?" I thought to myself.

I decided after a while that if I didn't come upon anything interesting I would ditch Mozart's hometown and jet back to Munich. That's when I went over a park hill and saw this:

The famous Mirabell Gardens, a palace and a set of beautiful gardens that were built by Bishop Wolf Dietrich, for his mistress, of all people! (As noted in guidebook, he didn't take celibacy too seriously!) I did buy a guidebook after touring this place, and the book said this was the most heavily visited tourist sites in Salzburg.

An overview of the gardens. This is why I wander around a new city without a plan, so I can discover stuff like this on my own!

According to Wikipedia, this garden is where they filmed the Do-re-mi scene for The Sound of Music!

I could srsly post a dozen pics from Mirabell, but I will restrain myself for now!

Behold! Mozart's birthplace! He was born somewhere in there. Mozart's house was also nearby, and you could see inside for 7 Euros, but I happen to know that his house was heavily damaged in WWII, so you only get to see a recreation really.

Mozart's birthplace is right long Getreidegasse, a neat street with lots of killer shops, cafes, and restaurants. Not all of the places cost an arm and a leg either! Check out all of the kick-ass signs. At the end of the street is a cliff face and a church!

Look closely at this ornate and lovely sign...

Behold! A shop that sells nothing but Mozart sweets!

A statue of Mozart. He's kind of a big deal around here. (And personally I don't think he looked like that in real life...)

Yay! Horsies! :D

Will make another Salzburg entry soon. I have waaaaay too many pictures of this place!
