only problem with your premise is the assumption that Pratchett could play it straight. HE always twists things up and around.

Oh, it wouldn't be played completely straight. But it needn't be completely subverted.

Look at how he has handled the most heroic, decent fellow in the Discworld -- Captain Carrot.

No, he can play it straight for the effect that it will have on others. Batman has a wonderful Rogues Gallery to mine.

Actually the more I think about it, he might abandon the "murdered parents" part of things, and just have the endlessly talented Moist himself don the Cape & Cowl, primarily out of boredom.

Not sure about the Watch being disbanded; more likely Vimes insists they don't need someone in a daft costume getting in the way, but nonetheless finds himself firing a flare from the Pseudopolis Yard rooftop for particularly weird crimes. He may or may not switch from cigars to a pipe...
