Computer problems

May 28, 2010 15:52

I've been off line for 4 days due to a computer virus. GRRRR.
Finally got the computer back right before the repair place closed for the long weekend. And then I had to reload MSN. Sorry if I'm late responding to anyone.

Sorry to hear about the virus...must admit I flinched as soon as I saw MSN as that's where a LOT of viruses (virii) come from! One of the reasons why I've always avoided using it!

Well, I got back the computer back, got on line and sent out my LJ message, checked the e-mail, checked LJ and somewhere in there the virus came back, so I didn't have the computer all weekend and took it back to the shop Tuesday morning (We had Memorial Day on Monday so most businesses were closed) and got it back Wednesday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they got it this time.

I never heard that MSN had a lot of viruses, but I guess they would not want to advertise. I have MSN because of the internet 'package' I got with a lower cost. This is only the second time I came down with a virus in about 6 years.

Well, crud! Do you know where you picked it up?

I'm glad you have your computer back, anyway!

I got the computer back, went on line and checked the email, downloaded a newer version of AVG, checked out LJ and somewhere in there the virus pops up again, doing the same thing and adding to it by sending me to porn sites. SIGH, so I was off the computer the whole weekend and took it back in on Tuesday, they worked on it again and I got it back today at noon. Now I just have to wait and see.

The virus kept telling me I had a virus and wouldn't I like to get rid of it, which sent me to some website selling anti virus software. When I tried to just use the computer off line it wouldn't let me open any program. After they got rid of the virus (ha!) it came back and added to the mess by popping up pages from porn sites. (No, not the fanfic kind). Lets hope they really got it this time.

Ack. That sounds kind of like the virus(es) I've heard about where the only product which was able to get rid of it was Malwarebytes--and sometimes it couldn't, and the remaining solution is to wipe the whole hard drive and re-install everything.

I hope the guys who supposedly fixed it got it done right this time--and that they didn't charge you any more for the additional work (since they didn't do what you were paying them for in the first place!).

Yes it was a pain. So far it's been working fine so I am keeping my fingers crossed. No, they didn't charge me any more. Actually they only charged $60.00, which for putting the computer in the shop I thought was a good price. Of course having to send it back... I'll just keep running my virus scan and the malware scans more often.
