Wow, sounds like a great trip. You're going to a lot of places I (especially since I minored in Classics) would love to see. Even Carthage! Er, I mean Tunis. :P That's where Hannibal was from, ya know--he was the Carthaginian commander who marched an army of men and elephants over the Alps and the Pyrenees (can you imagine?!) into Italy to fight against Rome. And you saw Pompeii! Climbed Mount Vesuvius! Wow, I'm nerding out over your trip and I'm not even on it. :P The story about Caroline at the mosque...hee, I can picture it. Well, you seem to be enjoying it, and I'm glad. Have a great rest of the trip!

It was a pretty good trip. I recommend both Pompeii and Vesuvius. I also was impressed to see Carthage for the very reason you mentioned. I can't imagine taking that many elephants for war like that. It boggles the mind. Heck of a general, he was.

Sounds like you guys had a great trip! I hear MSC is a pretty good cruise line, very Italian.

It's not bad. It's not up to the standard I've come to expect from Carnival or Princess, but then again, neither is the price. We were on a pretty slick boat, had an amazing room, and an awesome itinerary for a pretty good price. I'd recommend them.

They are definitely worth the money.

Ugh, you equate Carnival with Princess? You should try Celebrity sometime.

Who said I was equating anything to anything. I'm just saying I've been on Carnival and Princess and have come to have certain expectations. Though I'll admit they're small. Basically, I think American cruise lines have more exotic food, and the waiters talked more to us. Also, I was kind of getting used to the cute little towel animals in my stateroom. MSC didn't make those.

Aside from that, it was largely indistinguishable from an American cruise except that it had better bread and coffee. ^_^

Wow! That sounds like a really awesome trip.

Hey, I'm actually going to have a few free weeks mid-August. Can I come visit you?

We should be able to work something out some weekend. We're a bit booked toward the end of the month, but I think we'll be able to pull off something the weekend of the 11th or 25th. I'm thinking of going to an amusement park. Soond good?

Here's a question for ya: how was the food in the parts of Italy you visited (or did you eat on the boat? I don't know how those cruise things work)? When I went to Italy the areas I went to (Rome, Florence, Venice) had quite disappointing food (being a shameless gourmand, the food often 'makes' the trip for me). The only delicious thing I had there was gelato--and sometimes that wasn't even up to snuff. Other parts of the trip were disappointing as well--thus I had decided not to return. Maybe I should go to the areas you did? Let me know what you think, foodwise, as you've already recommended some things otherwise. :P

The only two times we ate off the boat, we had some pretty tasty gelato in Genoa and an AMAZING canolli in Palermo. We tried to keep our expenses low, and food on the boat was free. It was also pretty good.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Though when I went to Italy the last time, I found the food to be quite good. It just depends on where you go and what you want.
