Yuletide

So, good news at least on one front. I have my home computer back!! It has been repaired, and I can work on stories again!  Hurray!! It even came back in time for me to sign up for Yuletide last night.

In that spirit, Dear Yuletide Santa,

THANK YOU! First, thank you so much for volunteering for this fic exchange. I am sure I'll enjoy anything you create for me, so thank you!!  Overall, I love stories where people talk. I like families. I like humor, but I enjoy introspective "serious" stories too. I seem to like future fic this year. I'm really easygoing and appreciative, but if you have any questions, feel free to leave an anonymous question here. Here's a little more information about my requests:

American Dreams

What I loved about the show was the family relationships. So, while I asked for the Walker family  or the Pryor family responding to the 2008 election, I'd really love a peek at any of the characters--where they are today and what they're doing. Like JJ--as a veteran, is he a McCain supporter? Is he still married to Beth? What about Meg? Did she become reconciled to her parents and siblings after the Chris debacle? Is Roxanne still styling hair in Philadelphia or South Jersey somewhere, chain smoking and giving advice about men? What's Patty doing? What about Sam? Did Henry live to see the results of the election? Since the show had so much to do with activism and race and change on both the national and personal level, I'd love to see any of them again for a little while. And music never hurt!!

Mansfield Park

I love this novel. I really do. And maybe fan fiction based on it seems an odd thing to request, but look at all the profic out there (Edmund Bertram's Diary, anyone?) In the story, I like Fanny's goodness, her good intentions, her sweetness. She doesn't abandon her principles, though she doesn't seem to have too many good examples around her. I think I know why she falls in love with Edmund, but part of me always wonders what it took for him to see the girl in front of him as a woman. Insight on that would be awesome, but so would a wild AU or a 5 things fic. I'd just like to spend a little more time with these characters.

Jeanne Birdsall - The Penderwicks.

Okay, yeah, so it's not an adult series. They're worth reading anyway. Maybe I'm just a sucker for four sister stories (Little Women anyone?) But I really liked the four sisters and their slightly hapless botanist father and the family feeling of loyalty and love. Let me laugh at myself for a moment--i had some Jane tendencies, like taking my books and imaginary world a bit seriously and dramatically. And I had Rosamund tendencies--so eager to be a grown up and cook and babysit. I like Batty's shyness and loyalty to Hound, and Skye's temper is just hilarious. In the first book, I found Rosamund's crush on Cagney surprisingly sweet. And I'm sorry, he's not so dense that he missed it that completely when he said goodbye. I really liked that in the second novel Rosamund looked at someone her own age and got stretched out of the domestic mothering role she keeps trying to put herself into, especially with Batty.  But part of me wonders what would happen if Cagney saw Rosamund again years later. Would he remember her (yes!) and what would he say to her? What would she say to him? Het or gen are totally fine--it could be a love story, it could be nostalgia. I'd just like to see what they would say to each other.

Stranger than Fiction

This idea just plot bunnied me--it's kind of silly, so take it and do anything you please with it. Okay, so what happens when Harold stops hearing that one voice narrating? What would happen with fanfic? If the voice is narrating things Harold definitely is not doing? What about the boy on the bike and the woman driving the bus? What if Ana could hear  the voice too/instead? What would Hilbert have to say about it all? What if our writer gets a computer and discovers the Internet and fan fiction? How does she cope with and respond to others hijacking her characters?  I'm just fascinated with the idea of who can change a story.

If any of these comments give you ideas, awesome. If none of them do, just write something (anything!) in one of these four fandoms. They're all, as far as I know, pretty far off the beaten track, so more time in any one of these worlds would be wonderful. Thank you, and happy yuletide!!

ETA: I jinxed myself with this post--the computer broke again, so I'm writing this quickly from work. Guess the laptop is going back to IBM and I'm going back to libraries and campus computer labs till it's fixed. Sigh.
