Grumpy. Buddy of mine from way back in the day sent me a Facebook invite for a counter-demonstration here. Group calling itself Aryan Guard is doing something at City Hall on Sunday (day before the municipal election). Me being me, it of course cheesed me off that these thugs are in our city, so I tried to rouse some interest and encouraged people to do anything... barely a peep.
I know the feeling. It's very hard to rouse people out of apathy. I've tried, and failed, many times. The best strategy is to get involved in groups that are active on the issue. Being surrounded by people who care enough to get involved gives me energy to deal with all the people who don't. Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about what's happening in Calgary, so I can't direct you to anyone specifically. I would suggest getting involved with the group that put on the counter-demonstration. But also: The Northern Alberta Alliance on Race Relations might have some suggestions: www.naarr.org And, www.activist.ca is a good resource as well.
I'm putting on a conference on communism and youth issues next weekend. Gang warfare and racism is certainly an issue that's present in Alberta. Want to come to Edmonton for the weekend?
