So, we were at home last night watching a documentary on
Ferenc Puskas. And they were nattering on about world events in 1950.
ME: Hey, know what else happened in 1950?
deridere: Shut up.
ME: What?
deridere: Just shut up. I know what you were going to say.
The greatest upset in World Cup history. Now mind you there are results that meant more to the game and shaped it on all levels for years to come and probably results that meant even more to the game in the United States:
Paul Caliguiri's 35-yard left-footed shot in
1989 that returned the US to the World Cup for the first time in 40 years.
Earnie Stewart's run down the right-hand side to put the US up 2-0 against
Colombia in the final group game in the 1994 World Cup which put the US into the knockout stages. (This was the same game in which a Colombian defender scored an own goal and was later assassinated back home for it.)
A blizzard of first-half goals against a heavily favored Portgual squad helped push the US into the kockout stages where they
positively thumped our archrival Mexico before succumbing to Germany in a close game.
Whatever. The 1950 game remains a "Shock the world"-moment for US soccer. Come June 12, what has two thumbs and is hoping for a repeat? This guy!
