Three yards and a cloud of dust

Growing up, he was an absolute icon in our household. We went to every Michigan home game for years. We religiously watched the Rose Bowl every year. He was the very definition of old school. And he gave more of himself to U of M in time, money and service than could ever be repaid.

Rest in peace, Bo Schembechler.

As little as I care about UM football, I am saddened by his passing. There was something larger than life about the man. He had a really big heart, too. You could tell that he really cared -- not just about winning, but about the players, and about the game as something magical and eternal.

Indeed. One of the retrospectives they just showed on ESPN News had a clip of him going just insane at an official in the Rose Bowl -- I mean, bonkers -- and then cut to a clip of him a few years back chatting in an empty Michigan Stadium with Mitch Albom and making fun of himself.

I think the following is appropriate:

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' - Bill Shankly

For this weekend:

"When your team is winning, be ready to be tough, because winning can make you soft. On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing." - Guess Who.

*pauses for a moment of silence for the man in the maize and blue*

He was a crusty old man, but an endearing one. And Boy knew his football.
