I totally know that feeling! I was totally isolated and felt like no one saw me as more than a fancy tape recorder who could read things in whatever "funny" voice the JTE demanded. That's why I ended up leaving Osaka after my first year. I'm sure I missed out on a lot of fun, but my morale was so low...

Good luck with all of your endeavors, though. I'm sure you'll find meaning in Europe. (You should let me know if you find an awesome art history program... I'd LOVE to get out of the states again ;p )
