But at Jacobs, my American friends are realy into the whole Turkey Day thing, going so far as to say that this, not Christmas, is the hardest time to not be with their family.  So there’s gonna be a big to-do about it, involving lots of cooking, which I’m pretty excited about!  We did a run through of the pies last Friday, and I made the pumpkin ( Read more... )

I'll finish out this year. It really depends on the next semester. If things pick up, as I hear they will, and if I get a freakin job so I can stop living on my savings, I'll be much happier here.

Yeah. I know, it's kind of like looking a gift horse in the mouth (are you the one who didn't understand what that means?) but I don't want to be wasting my time. Glen and I have been talking about going off and doing other things, too... but I do want to stay and get my MA if the program gets better!

Decisions, decisions! I must say these are almost ALWAYS better made on a stomach full of mashed potatoes and pie. Well, and turkey. But you'll probably forgo that one, which is okay, it just means you'll make something like an A-/B+ decision.

You want to know the secret of AWESOME pumpkin pie? Mash up a banana in there. You may think "whaaat? no!" but trust me. A banana will lend a sweet and creamy magic. Also, I'm very impressed you're making pie FROM SCRATCH. Bully for you!

Thanks for the tip, and you're right, I am a bit skeptic, but I want to try it! I wonder if people will let me do it on the actual day. We have different baking philosophies, you see: I stress people out by saying things like, "Oh, we can just eyeball it!" and "Naaaah, you should put more in! Cinnamon is good." and people drive me crazy by insisting on the exact measurements and saying things like, "Cooking is a science!". It's not. It's an art! C'mon people!

It's a good thing we're each in charge of our own dishes. Maybe then I can get away with a banana in the pie!!

ps - I'm not making the crust from scratch. Don't be too impressed ; )

Are these people German? I picture them being all "Ve must measure ze ingredients or it vill be ruint!"

I too am a "dash of this, little more of that, taste as you go" kind of chef/baker. And my stuff is ususally bangin. Clearly we're on to something here. Germany! Relax and live a little!

No, and that's the really surprising part, they're from the US! However, the one girl who was not very relaxed has never been out of the US really, and was kinda skeptical that pumpkin pie could be made without using the stuff from a can!!!
