Went to No Doubt. AWESOME. No backbends, but they're all still as crazy as ever...running around, jumping on the props, pounding on drums. Shirley Manson made a surprise appearance during a cover of "Stand and Deliver," and Laura and I nearly fell over the railing with excitement

Ugh, hippies. That part of the 60s never interested me much. I prefer the harder rock side of things and the people who actually took steps to make changes and didn't just drop out of society. Peace and love makes me queasy : ). Oh, that reminds me, I was digging through some old files on my computer and found the song/poem I wrote defending Benny in Rent.
And didn't the Phoenix kids grow up in some crazy hippy commune? And River is dead and Joaquin is crazy, but their sister married Casey Affleck, which means she's Jennifer Garner's sister-in-law, so she came out fine. Rose McGowan was raised in that too--Children of God, IIRC--and she dated Marilyn Manson for year. I rest my case.

I totally agree with you about the hippies, and the thing about them that really annoys me is that they're completely self-absorbed. They claim to be upset about the world's injustices, but really they're just cowards. Their answer is to hide in the woods, be faux poor, and exist completely separately (while mooching off welfare if possible), rather than think of someone else like maybe actual poor people or black people being lynched by racists and then use their skills and knowledge to change the world. They're total frauds. They don't want to change the world. They want to indulge themselves completely, whether it's drugs, sex, travel, no job, whatever. And on top of all that, they take their kids down with them. I've really got no respect for hippies, then or now.
But I'm glad at least one of those Phoenix kids turned out not to be a freak.
