A few screencaps of John from the end of Sherlock, ep. 3, with some character thoughts.
Because I am nothing if not a desperate and thorough fan of John Watson.
What struck me the most about this scene was not just his body language and his silent pain, but the bare feet. Throughout all of series 1 with Sherlock, John is buttoned up, clothed, protected. There were a few scenes during series 2 where we see a bit more relaxed clothing from John (not the least of which being the bathrobe & bare knees scene!!!). Now that they've been friends (even colleagues) for a far longer time now, John doesn't have to be as buttoned up as he was before. He trusts; he doesn't need to protect himself the way he did before.
But this. The bare feet just did me in. *sob* Other than that he's all buttoned up, fastened and protected, but his bare feet leave him looking so vulnerable and it just made me cry more. It was almost as if he couldn't completely protect himself anymore, because the very worst thing had happened.
This. This very deliberate need for contact, and the almost perfunctory way in which he touched Sherlock's headstone while he was speaking.
"I was so alone, and I owe you so much."
I chose this cap also because of the way he's controlling his mouth as much as he can to keep in the emotions that are clearly roiling inside him. That tight-mouthed expression says so much.
And this close up basically did me in, where he was asking for one more miracle. *sob* One more miracle that he has to wait three years to experience. (crap, tearing up again) How is he going to wait that long -- what will he do during those years? John.
This I just thought was brilliant filming. It was almost like that moment was too raw, too overwhelming, and it would have been disrespectful to show him, except in silhouette or reflection.
And this. This was the moment just before John's about face, where you can see him basically telling himself to pull it together, soldier, and just move along. He's so controlled, through and through, and yet Sherlock Holmes is the one person that can pull him apart, can break through that tight wall that he's put up, but he still can't let his guard down for that long or he'll lose it and not be able to get it back.
Okay, enough of that. Well, enough of that for now. I haven't even gotten into the moments when he was in Ella's office or on the phone, reaching out to Sherlock. Oh man, this episode is going to do me in for a good long while. Martin Freeman, you deserve all the awards. ALL OF THEM.
