[Background] Let's start waaaay back to when he was chosen as Cornelia's Knight. It all started when they both did a series of simulator battles against each other, in which Cornelia easily won the first few rounds. But Guilford, despite being beaten, wouldn't give up, and finally managed to beat her on the third try. It was right there and then that Cornelia had decided on a knight, and that was him.
Fast forward to the present. He was first seen aiding Cornelia in the establishment of area 18, after completing it shortly leaving for area 11. Upon arrival, his first task was to inform Jeremiah Gottwald of his demotion, telling him that he has a choice of starting over with the rank of pilot or wave an orange flag wherever he goes.
He continues to serve her until the black rebellion, where he and the Glaston Knights deflected the already crumbling order of the black knights without knowing that Cornelia was injured.
A year after the black rebellion, he is still stationed in area eleven awaiting for Cornelia's return, as she had disappeared after the black rebellion. When terrorists attacked babel tower, Guilford had volunteered to try and stop the terrorists, but Careres, then Governor-General of Area 11 had declined his offer, stating that he was a guest under his care. Later on, Governor Carares died as the terrorists then blew up the babel tower and had its falling debris crush the governor. Then and there Guilford then takes up the role of Governor-General for the time being.
When Zero had returned and seeked refuged under the Chinese Consulate, Guilford attempts to lure him out by ordering a public execution of the captured Order of the Black knights. But his plans were thwarted, as Zero makes use of the floor plating to land them unto chinese federation soil. He also lost two of the Glaston Knights.
Later, during the Black Knight's attempt to capture Nunnally, Guilford unexpectedly arrives in the Vincent Commander class. Though he had managed to gain the upper hand in the battle, the tables have turned when Kallen turned the table with her upgraded Guren Aerial type. She had managed to destroy Guilford's vincent, but not before Guilford managing to escape at the last minute. He was later seen in the hospital recovering.
During the battle for Japan, Lelouch had made use for Guilford by managing to geass him to think that Lelouch is Cornelia, and manages to get him to his side. Because of the geass in effect, he sacrificed his life to push lelouch out of Freya's blast radius, whom he still believes as Cornelia, saying the last words "Live on"
Near the end of the war, It was revealed that he survived the blast and is with Cornelia, who was recovering from gunshot wounds. He was with Cornelia during Ohgi and Villeta's wedding
[Personality]
He is undoubtedly loyal to his country and princess, and he doesn't hesitate to execute any order he is given. He's also quite good at controlling his emotions, and rarely shows his true feelings, especially with Cornelia around. He is chivalrous, polite , and he does have manners (of course, what do you expect from a knight?).
Socially speaking, he's pretty hard to talk to, typically because he's usually quiet and gives the look that would probably have you reconsider talking to him. But once you get to know him, well you probably can get along with him just fine. He's also not the type who'd like to have his pride stepped on, and against of doing anything so low,executing public executions for example.
He has a major flaw: his utter devotion to Cornelia. Though yes it gives him the drive and will to server her better, it can be a hindrance when she is in danger, as he cannot think clearly and may act rash with his decisions. Think of his devotion as a double edged sword.

First of all, Guilford is typically the kind who would restrain his feelings with a short leash. More often than not he would rather not express is true feelings, but there are times when he will suddenly just

Though Guilford is a trained soldier, HE WILL NOT FIGHT UNLESS IT IS NECESSARY/ORDERED BY CORNELIA. He also won't agree to a fight unless it's fair and just, since he is against fighting low and dirty.
