Character name: England [Arthur Kirkland]
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: Early 2010
Age: Physically he is around 23. The first recorded history was 43 AD, though there is evidence of human presence before that. Basically, England is a really, really old fart.

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
England has a talent for magic, and has the ability to see and converse with the supernatural. He enjoys cooking, but his food seems to be toxic to just about everyone except himself and his brothers. As a nation, he is long-lived, stronger and more durable than the average human.

How would they use their abilities?:
He’ll most likely hold conversations with magical creatures to keep the loneliness at bay. He’s likely to accidentally poison someone with his cooking.

Appearance:
England is about 175 cm (5’7.5”) in height and has an average build (though he is more on the lean side). His blonde hair is kept in a short, shaggy cut. The most prominent feature on his face, besides his green eyes, is his large, bushy eyebrows, which he is rather sensitive about. England’s idea of casual wear is sweater vests, dress shirts and trousers, which America would deem “old man-ish”. For meetings and other formal events, he wears suits.

Background/Personality:

History:

Britannia was visited and conquered by Roma Antiqua (the Roman Empire) twice, whom asserted his culture and history upon Britannia. He introduced many things and modernized Britannia, leaving a legacy still apparent today.

The Anglo-Saxons settled in and created kingdoms in England, forcing the Britons to retreat. The unification of England eventually happened in the 10th century. Around 600 AD, Christianization began through Celtic Christianity from the northwest and the Roman Catholic Church from the southeast.

England was a child in the Middle Ages, already despising France, but secretly admiring his culture, which lead to copying his hair and clothing style. He then spent hundreds of years warring with France over nearly everything, but usually over territory. They argue over everything, and are always trying to one up each other.

England and the other European Powers were in a race to explore and expand their empires, each intent on being the first to arrive and claim the New World. England and France ended up being the main competitors to win America’s affection, and therefore gain a colony. Eventually America chose England, which was the beginning of their close relationship. England doted on America, raising his ‘brother’ to what he considered to be the best of his abilities, despite having to spend much of his time overseas in his own land. As America grew older, England imposed more restrictions, taxes, and laws, straining their relationship to the point where America decided to seek independence, leading to the Revolutionary War.

England’s defeat meant the end of their close relationship as brothers, and the beginning of America’s independence as a new nation. England completely shifted his attention to his colonies in Asia, the Pacific, and Africa, building up his empire.

He was threatened with invasion and as an empire by France, whose boss, Napoleon, nearly succeeded in taking over Europe. England eventually won, emerging as the principal naval power of the 19th century, and remained so until the 20th century.

The Kingdom of Great Britain was created in 1707 by the union of England and Scotland. About a century later, Ireland merged with Britain to form the United Kingdom. Ireland eventually had a war of independence and broke free in the early 1900s, with Northern Ireland deciding to remain as part of the UK. As a result, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland came into being.

The UK, France, and Russia created the Triple Entente in WWI to fight the Central Powers, with other nations, such as America, joining later to create the Allied Powers. With the defeat of the Central Powers, Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire all ceased to be major imperial powers. Russia too ceased to be a major power, causing the Soviet Union to eventually form. European nationalism, repercussions of Germany’s defeat, and the Treaty of Versailles eventually led to the beginning of WWII.

England and America’s relationship was lukewarm at best, and they only managed to be cordial for diplomatic and trading purposes. It wasn’t until WWII that their relationship finally started improving. After the defeat of England’s European allies in the first year of WWII, he was the only one of the Allies to oppose the Axis Powers, and was constantly attacked through aerial warfare by Germany. America eventually joined the Allies, and helped defeat the Axis Powers (Germany, Japan, and Italy). The integration of their military efforts was to a degree unprecedented among major allies in history, so that Churchill (Prime Minister of the UK at the time), named the ties between the two countries as a “Special Relationship.” Since then, political, economical, and social ties have been extremely close between the two.

The aftermath of WWII signaled the end of the British Empire, with colonies either becoming fully independent or joining the Commonwealth of the UK. In the 20th century, devolved national administrations were established for Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Personality:

England gives the impression of being a conservative, intelligent individual that is a bit old fashioned and stiff. He presents himself as a gentleman, and as such dresses well, has afternoon tea, practices proper etiquette and manners (which he expects of others no matter where they’re from), though it sometimes comes off as an air of superiority.

Underneath the gentlemanly manner is a foul-mouthed, once delinquent who has a very sharp tongue and disparaging view of the world. It doesn’t take much to bring this side out of him (it is especially easy for France, America, and his brothers), as he has little patience for idiocy and incompetence. He is abrasive and argumentative; unafraid to let someone know what he thinks of them, whether it is through insults or his fists.

England is stubborn to a fault, which can be beneficial as well as detrimental. Once he believes something, it is nigh impossible to convince him otherwise, especially when he thinks he’s right. His obstinacy has permitted him to keep his independence, as well as allowed him to gain what he wants. Even in the face of impossible odds, he refuses to give in, such as in WWII, when he was, at one point, the lone force against the Axis Powers. He can be very pigheaded and is able to keep a grudge for centuries. He has a long standing rivalry with France, to the point of siding with anyone would oppose the other nation just for a chance to fight him. Even today, over two hundred years later, he is still somewhat bitter about America’s independence. Though there are times he can put aside resentments for the greater good.

England is very independent and is uncomfortable with displaying any kind of weakness. Despite being lonely, he’s very insistent on being able to stand alone.

He tends to put up a prickly front, but for those he is closer to, he can be loving and caring, even showing a paternal side to his (once) colonies. He isn’t likely to open up to anyone, but once he allows himself to truly care for someone, he does so wholeheartedly, so when it is thrown back in his face, it devastates him, as in the case of America’s independence. England has a tendency to deny caring about anyone, even to himself, and covers it with insults and denial, so if there is any rejection, he can say he never cared at all.

1st person sample:
[The feed turns on to a remarkably bushy eyebrow, before the owner of said eyebrow backs up to reveal a furious, blonde man, who looks ready to explode.]

I haven’t the time for such idiocy, especially with an election coming up. I do not believe this utter nonsense about the world being destroyed and I do not need a blasted towel! [He tosses aforementioned towel into the face of a hapless alien, who squeaks in surprise and tries slinking away unnoticed.] AND DON’T BLOODY WELL TELL ME TO “STOP PANICKING”!

[He suddenly calms down. Those who know him will know to run for cover.]

I will find the individual responsible.

[The feed abruptly cuts.]

3rd person sample:

England decided to make use of the sudden, ample free time he found himself with (the destruction of the world tended to do that). After all, idle hands were the devil’s tools.

Besides enjoying the hobby, cooking also distracted him from the enormity of his situation, from questions there seemed to be no answers to.

“Let’s see here…” England mumbled to himself, eyebrows furrowing. The recipe called for two cups of flour, a fourth of a cup of white sugar, two teaspoons of baking powder, a third of a cup of unsalted butter, one egg, one teaspoon of vanilla, a half cup of whipping cream and…why was there a smudge on the page? Clearly the previous owner was a messy individual. The book said something about salt…well, it was fortunate that he was good at estimating. England carefully measured the other ingredients out and mixed them in a bowl, along with a quarter cup of salt, quickly stirring everything together. Following the rest of the instructions as carefully as he could, he was finally able to place the scones in the oven. Extremely relieved, he picked up a book to read in the next room over until the scones were ready.

After some time, England began to worry. Why wasn’t the oven timer going off? And…was that smoke? Arthur threw the book down and ran into the kitchen, coughing as he saved the scones. Setting them down, he observed them critically. It wasn’t terrible…only a little black.

England was about to set them on a platter when an obnoxious voice announced its insufferable presence.

“Hey Arthur! Whatcha-” America wrinkled his nose. Was Arthur attempting to make food again? God forbid.

“Alfred, just in time for tea.” England gave America a rare smile.

“Er…uh….” America blanched, and took off running, not once looking back.

“W-Well, I wasn’t about to share with an ungrateful prat like you!”
